But arguablythe folks that were most surprised were in fact the Norse. Picked to contend for the top two-spots in the conference the Norse have stumbled out of the gate, dropping their third straight contest while falling to 0-1, 0-3 in the early going. Melrose-Mindoro 14, Whitehall 6 Mustang quarterback Blake Shepherd did it all Friday night, tossing a 28-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and then racing 38 yards for a score to seal the win over Whitehall with under a minute to play. Whitehall had closed within 8-6 with less than half a quarter to play. But Ryan Sygullas two-point conversion rushing attempt came up short. The win kept Mel-Min undefeated at 3-0 after finishing the 2006 schedule in last place with only one win. Meanwhile the defending conference champion Norsemen are still winless after three games. Total yards Mel-Min 180 (104 rushing/76 passing); Whitehall 294 (233 rushing/61 passing). Eleva-Strum 41, Cochrane-Fountain City 6 It took them a quarter, but the Cardinals shook of a slow start, then put up 28 second-quarter points to easily dismiss the Pirates. Leading only 7-0 on a Lance Rongstad first-quarter score, E-S saw their Mr. Everything quarterback run for another score while tossing touchdown passes of 27 and 32 yards to Nick Rogness. The latter added a 50-yard punt return to the mix as Central rolled to a 35-0 lead by halftime. Total yards Central 231 (145 rushing/86 passing); C-FC 92 (38 rushing/54 passing). Alma 41, Blair-Taylor 12 The Wildcats scored their first points of the season, but it was the Rivermen who put on the early offensive show as they scored 21 points in the second quarter to pull away to a 27-0 halftime lead. B-T struggled in the turnover department, as they gave the ball away five times, including three on fumble recoveries to the Alma defense. The Rivermen averaged almost 10 yards per rushing carry in the game, while the Wildcats Jake Kennedy also had an impressive night with 191 yards on 14 carries. Total yards Alma 442 (344 rushing on 39 carries/98 passing); B-T 337 (273 rushing on 36 attempts/64 passing). Independence-Gilmanton 39, Lincoln 0 The Indees dominated both sides of the ball in route to the easy win. The Hornets were held to just 11 net yards in the game, while the I-G offense broke open a close game with 33-unanswered points in the second quarter. Andy Curtis led the Indee offense with four touchdowns that included a 39-yard run. The I-G defense forced four Hornet fumbles, recovering three for key turnovers. There was no scoring in the second hal three for key turnovers. There was no scoring in the second half of the game.
